Google Play store listing character limits
Google Play gives you three text fields for your store listing, each with a hard character limit. Because Play has no separate keyword field, these three fields are also your entire search strategy. Here are the limits and how to make the most of every character.
The limits
| Field | Limit | Job |
|---|---|---|
| App title | 30 characters | Brand + primary keyword |
| Short description | 80 characters | The hook near the top of the listing |
| Full description | 4,000 characters | Detail + indexed search text |
App title (30 characters)
Short and precious. Lead with your brand name, and if there's room, add your single most important keyword — for example "Notes" or "Budget". Don't cram in multiple keywords; a clean title reads as more trustworthy and still gets indexed.
Short description (80 characters)
This one-liner appears near the top of your listing and is one of the most-read pieces of copy you have. Combine a clear benefit with a key term. Write it for a human first — it strongly influences whether people expand the full description or bounce.
Full description (4,000 characters)
This is where detail and search text live. Google Play indexes this copy, so your important keywords should appear naturally — but write for people, not the algorithm. Keyword stuffing reads as spam and can hurt you. A good structure:
- Open with the core value in the first line or two (that's what shows before "read more").
- List key features as short, scannable bullets.
- Weave in the terms people search for, in normal sentences.
- Close with social proof or a call to action.
Don't forget to localize it
Each language gets its own title and descriptions — and its own keyword opportunity. Translating these into your top markets is one of the highest-return ASO moves; see how to localize your Google Play listing.
Write once, localize everywhere
Playboard keeps your listing copy and captions per language and translates them in a click — free, in your browser.
