Google Play ASO: how to rank higher

By Digital Sauce · Updated July 2026 · 6 min read

App Store Optimization (ASO) is the work of getting your app found and installed on the store. On Google Play it comes down to two things: showing up for the right searches, and convincing the people who land on your listing to tap Install. Here are the levers that actually matter, roughly in order.

1. Your title and description are your keywords

Google Play has no separate keywords field. It indexes your app title, short description and full description for search. That makes your listing copy do double duty: it has to read naturally for humans and contain the terms people search for.

Details and limits are in our store listing character limits guide.

2. Screenshots decide your conversion rate

Ranking gets people to your listing; screenshots decide whether they install. A clear, benefit-led set can lift conversion dramatically, and higher conversion feeds back into ranking. This is usually the single highest-leverage thing you can improve. See how to make screenshots that convert.

3. Icon and feature graphic

Your icon is your first impression in search results, and the feature graphic represents you anywhere Google promotes your app. Both should be clean, on-brand and instantly readable at small sizes.

4. Ratings and reviews

Your rating is a strong signal for both ranking and conversion. Prompt happy users to rate at natural moments, respond to reviews, and fix the issues that keep coming up. A jump from 3.8 to 4.5 stars is worth more than most keyword tweaks.

5. Localization

Translating your listing and screenshots into your biggest markets opens you to searches in those languages and lifts conversion for users browsing in their own language. It's one of the highest-ROI moves once your English listing is solid — see how to localize your Google Play listing.

6. Treat it as a loop, not a launch

ASO isn't one-and-done. Ship a solid listing, watch your Play Console conversion data, then test one change at a time — a new first screenshot, a rewritten short description, a new language. Keep what wins. Small, steady improvements compound.
