Google Play app icon size & design best practices
Your icon is the first thing anyone sees — in search results, in the charts, and on the home screen after they install. Google Play has one exact size for it, plus a few rules that trip people up. Here's the spec and how to design an icon that reads at a glance.
The exact spec
| Spec | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 512 × 512 px |
| Format | 32-bit PNG (with alpha) |
| Shape | Full square — Play applies the mask |
| Max file size | 1 MB |
Play masks your icon — design for it
Upload a full 512×512 square. Google Play rounds the corners and can mask your icon into different shapes across the store and on-device. Don't round the corners yourself, and keep your logo comfortably inside the centre so nothing important gets clipped at the edges.
Design tips that make an icon work
- One clear idea. A single, bold symbol beats a busy scene. It has to read at tiny sizes in the search list.
- Avoid text. Words turn to mush when the icon is small. Let the shape and colour do the work.
- High contrast. Make sure it stands out on both light and dark home screens.
- Own a colour. A distinctive background colour makes your app easy to spot in a crowded list.
- Match your brand. The icon, feature graphic and screenshots should feel like one family.
Design your icon alongside everything else
Playboard includes a built-in icon designer, so you can build your 512×512 icon in the same place as your screenshots and feature graphic — using the same colours — and export it ready for the Play Console.
