How to make Google Play screenshots that convert

By Digital Sauce · Updated July 2026 · 5 min read

Your screenshots are the single biggest lever on your Google Play conversion rate. Most people who land on your listing decide from the screenshots alone, without reading a word of the description. Here's how to design a set that turns those visits into installs.

1. Lead with your strongest screen

The first one or two screenshots are shown in the search results carousel, before anyone taps through. Treat the first screenshot as a billboard: it should communicate the single most compelling reason to install, instantly. Don't waste it on a login screen or a splash page.

2. Add a device frame

A raw screenshot floating on a white background looks unfinished. Wrapping it in a clean phone or tablet frame makes it read as a real, polished product. It also gives you a coloured background around the device where your caption can live.

3. Write benefit-led captions

Every screenshot should carry a short headline that says what the user gets, not what the screen is. Compare:

4. Brand it, but keep it clean

Pick one or two background colours and stick to them across the set so the row of screenshots looks intentional. A cohesive colour story signals quality. Avoid clutter — one idea per screenshot beats five.

5. Design for the thumbnail, not just full size

In search results your screenshots appear small. Zoom your design out to roughly thumbnail size and check that the caption is still legible and the key UI is still recognisable. If it turns to mush, simplify.

6. Localize for your top markets

A user scanning the store in their own language is far more likely to install. Translating your captions and store listing into your biggest markets is one of the highest-ROI things you can do. See our guide to localizing your Google Play listing.

7. Export at Google Play's exact sizes

Finally, export at the sizes Google Play expects so nothing gets rejected or squashed. The full list is in our Google Play screenshot sizes guide: 1080×1920 for phones, plus the tablet sizes and the 1024×500 feature graphic.
