Google Play vs App Store screenshots: key differences

By Digital Sauce · Updated July 2026 · 4 min read

If you ship on both Android and iOS, you can't just reuse the same screenshot files. Google Play and the Apple App Store have different sizes, different limits and different search mechanics. Here's what actually changes between the two.

Sizes work differently

Google Play thinks in device types: you provide a phone set and optional 7-inch and 10-inch tablet sets, and Play only requires that the longer side is no more than twice the shorter. The Apple App Store instead asks for screenshots at specific display sizes tied to particular iPhone and iPad models. In practice that means the crops and aspect ratios don't line up one-to-one, so a straight copy-paste looks wrong on one store or the other.

The feature graphic is Play-only

Google Play requires a 1024×500 feature graphic to be featured; the App Store has no equivalent. If you're porting an iOS listing to Android, this is the asset you'll be missing.

Search works differently

The App Store has a dedicated 100-character keyword field. Google Play doesn't — it indexes your title and descriptions instead, so on Android your keyword strategy lives inside your listing copy. That changes how you write for each store. More on that in our store listing character limits guide.

What you can reuse

The creative — your captions, brand colours, device-frame style and the story your screenshots tell — carries across both stores. It's the dimensions and export sizes that differ. So the efficient workflow is: design one strong concept, then export it at each store's required sizes.

Building for iOS as well? Playboard focuses on Google Play; our native Mac app, Storeboard, handles the App Store side with device-specific sizes, keyword research and App Store Connect publishing.
